An individual, undergoing yoga therapy treatment in our center, has to maintain strict discipline in life. There are few “must do’s” which they have to follow daily and ignoring them can have an adverse effect. Firstly, it is doing stretching exercises every day which keeps the muscles around the hip joint movable. This can be achieved by performing the stretches taught in our session. Secondly always try to adopt a good posture throughout with awareness and effort. This will help in equal distribution of weight over the feet & consciously try to relax the muscles when resting. Given below are some basic postures taught in our Medical yoga school By Dr. Deepak Sachdeva, Medical Yoga Center.
Static Supta Padangusthasana 1 and 3:
Pose 1 in padangusthasana does not involve rotation, abduction, or adduction of hip, hence it stretches the muscles of the thigh evenly. Push up from your calves and heels and pull down your toes while spreading them. It helps in strengthening the hip joint and tones the lower spine. It relieves sciatic pain.
k PadSupta Gomukhasana with Belt:
This pose stretches the gluteus, performs and the hip rotator muscles. It promotes mobility of the hip joint while strengthening muscles of the back. It improves the curvature of the spine.
The asanas help to reduce stiffness in the joint, strengthens the muscles, deep relaxation and rest to the joint which will reduce inflammation and decrease in pain & swelling. It also prevents further joint swellings. Yoga works as an alternative medicine which has been influenced by the ancient Indian practice of Hatha Yoga. The medical yoga postures are designed with emphasis given on proper alignment and execution to improve flexibility, balance, and strength. In Patanjali yoga sutra, it is explained that the cause of all sufferings is Avidya (Ignorance/ ground for losing touch with reality). Ignorance needs to be removed to attune oneself to one’s true nature. This can be achieved by continuous practice over an extended period of time, without a break and in all earnest. Prolonged practice can train the mind to observe and attune within.
Along with yoga practice it is important to have a change in lifestyle which includes:
Sattvic food which helps in cleansing the bowel improves digestion and clears the mind. A diet which supplies sufficient and adequate nutrients required by the body is called a sattvic diet. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, which contains important vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E. Avoid foods which can lead to any kind of discomfort.
Eat foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as cold water fish (salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseed, rapeseed (canola) oil, soya bean oil, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts.
Get plenty of sleep which helps a person recover from the flare up quickly.
Avoid staying in one position for too long.
Thus therapeutic benefits of yoga help in regularizing the physical movement by focusing on and developing an awareness of it which can improve synchronization between mind and body. To maintain effect achieved through yoga practice, it is necessary to keep performing the postures lifelong to avoid and cure the problems related to hip joints.
As mentioned in Patanjal Yog Sutra
“sa tu dÄ«rghakÄla nairantarya satkÄra-Ädara-Äsevito dá¹›á¸habhÅ«miḥ” || 1.14 ||
Success can definitely be achieved via sound and continuous practice over an extended period of time carried out in a serious and thoughtful manner.
In the end, have faith and trust in what you are doing, that is “Ishwar pranidhan (surrender)”.
