Symptoms

Pain in whole spine (neck to lower back), difficulty in walking, shortness of breath after a few steps, could not go out in the market or malls to tiredness, lack of confidence, pain and travelling issues, could not fold legs or sit down on the floor, pain was in the hip joints and knee joints andalso at the back of the thighs, could not turn his neck, pain and stiffness in neck and shoulders.

Previous Treatments

Along with regular visits to the allopathic physician who is a Rheumatologist patient also followed:

  • Naturopathy treatment for 6 months
  • Physiotherapy for 6 months
  • Ayurvedic treatment for 1 year
  • Massage treatment for 1 month and
  • Allopathic treatment for 5 years

At present, due to his unbearable pain & body's reduced response to ongoing medicines and pain blockers the Rheumatologist has advised the patient for steroid treatment through REMICAD. Before trying REMICAD treatment he has joined Dr Deepak Sachdeva's Medical Yoga Centre. After the clinical check up & going through patient s medical reports, medically modified asanas mentioned on the right were prescribed.

Thereafter the progress made during the first three months of medical yoga sessions is given below.

Symptoms

He had been suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis since the past twenty years. In 2007, he became bed-ridden. He couldn't lift his hands at all. It took him ten minutes to turn to the other side while sleeping. He couldn't walk properly. His backbone had stooped and he was in constant ache. He had been hospitalised six times in 2008.

Patient joined Medical Yoga sessions for a special 7 day pain relief camp. She was asked to attend the sessions for 1 hour every day for 7 days. She was also asked to practice 1 asana at home 10 to 15 mints.

In diet she was asked to have 2 ‘Munakka’ (Abjosh) and white sesame seeds in the morning. She is also advised to use 1 pinch of Baking Soda for 3 weeks to control hyperacidity and reduce heat related issues in body.

Patient came with the complaint/s of
  • Pain in both knee joints
  • Swelling and pain in both leg muscles
  • Difficulty in bending both knees

Patient also had lower back pain and stiffness which increases with household work. Have complaints of hyperacidity, overweight and overall body heat, feels excessive tiredness and thirst all day. Fibroids in uterus. Gall bladder removed in 2010.

Clinical examination
  • Swelling on both knees anterior and medial aspects.
  • Stiffness in calves and thigh muscles.
  • Both knee joints shows osteo arthritis changes in examination.

Previous treatments

Allopathic treatment including
  • Pain blockers
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Antacids

Other treatments: Patient has taken physiotherapy, acupressure, ayurveda treatments at various point of time but had temporary relief.

Medical Yoga therapy: Then patient came to 7 days medical yoga pain relief workshop and after clinical check up & going through patient’s medical reports, medically modified asanas mentioned here were prescribed.

1. Alignment corrector stretch

2. Knee strengthening 1,2,3,4 with tool-1

3. Reverse Bhek with with tool 1 and and a pillow

Alignment corrector stretch: To restore the correct alignment of femur with tibia. This is to correct the weight bearing axis of the body and remove pressure on the inner side (Medical compartment) of the knee joint.

Knee strengthening 1,2,3,4 with tool-1: To improve the blood circulation to the knee joint. This also helped to stimulate the knee capsule from the posterior side and helped improving filtration of the joint fluid.

Reverse Bhek with with tool 1 and a pillow: To release the stiffness of the front thigh muscles (specifically Rectus femoris in the quadriceps group) to improve the range of motion of the knee as well as hip joint.

Asanas prescribed for reliving knee pain due to Osteo Arthritis:

1. Dandasana with double knot foot stretch

2. Supta Padangusth asana 1 with rope

3. Reverse Bhekasana with rope and pillow

Clinical examination:

Muscular stiffness in the lower back and calf muscles. Thigh pain is related to the femoral nerve.

Medical Yoga therapy: After clinical check up & assessing the medical reports, a medically modified sequence of 4 asanas were prescribed

Asanas that were done during the treatments:

1. Vipreet karni 1 with one stool and 1 pillow

2. Ek pad supt Gomukh asana

3. Reverse Bhekasana with 1 yellow belt

4. Sputa padangusth asana 1 with rope

Vipreet karni: To release the stiffness in the lumbar region muscles (quadratus lumboram) muscle and illiocostalis muscle). Also to restore the natural curve of the lumbar spine (lumbar lordosis).

Gomukh asana: To release the pressure on the sciatic nerve of the six deep lateral rotator muscles in the hip joint. Also improves the range of motion of the hip joint so that the forward bending movement in the day to day life is done from both the hip joint and lumbar region. This significantly reduced the pressure of the lumbar discs and eventually on the lumbar nerves during forward bend.

Patient joined Medical Yoga sessions for a special 6 day stress and body pain relief camp. She was asked to attend the sessions for 1 hour every day for 6 days. She was also given a sequence of 2 asanas to practice at home for a total of 25 min (10+15min).

In diet she was given a body detoxification diet plan for 10 days to be started from the 5th of asana practice.

Patient came with the complaint/s of:
  • High stress levels
  • Indigestion
  • Overweight

Case history: Patient also informed that she had chest congestion 4 years back and was put on steroids which increased her weight by 8 kgs in a few weeks.

Medical Yoga therapy: In the above said workshop after clinical check up & going through patient’s medical reports and history, a sequence of medically modified asanas was prescribed.

Asana sequence:

1. Suptaveer asana 1 with two pillows and a blanket (also advised to practice at home for 10min)

2. Sputa baddhkon asana 1 with two pillows and a blanket

3. Vipreet dandasana 1 with 1 pillow, 1 bolster and 1 blanket

4. Vipreet karni 2 with one chair (also advised to practice at home for 15min)

Suptveerasana 1 with 2 pillows and a blanket: To increase the energy of the heart chakra. To increase the focus on one particular action. It relaxes the nervous system and soothe the senses thereby reduces the effect of ‘fight or flight mechanism’ (stress) in the body. It also helpful to improve digestion, cardiac conditions, hormonal imbalance and respiratory disorder.

Vipreet karni: To release the stiffness in the lumbar region muscles (quadratus lumboram) muscle and illiocostalis muscle). Also to restore the natural curve of the lumbar spine (lumbar lordosis).
